El Roble students surprise Gilroy's Guerrero

Gilroy’s Robert Guerrero is scheduled to leave Sunday for his training camp in Las Vegas, where he’ll fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 4.

The Gilroy native and interim WBC welterweight champion was given a special parting gift Friday that he plans to bring with him.

Guerrero was surprised Friday afternoon with a banner signed by El Roble Elementary School students wishing the six-time, four-division world champion luck. Guerrero signed autographs for the students, who flocked toward him while chanting “Ghost,” his nickname.

“It was fun, man,” Guerrero said. “I see them every day, so it’s cool. It’s cool to see them all together. It’s nice because I know the kids, I come here, I do assemblies. I see them all cheering me on for the next fight. It’s cool.

“I know I’ve got a lot of kids pulling for me. I’ve got the sign, (and) I’m going to hang it in the gym when I go train.”

Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs) will fight pound-for-pound king Mayweather (43-0, 26 KOs) on May 4 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The bout will be televised on Showtime Pay Per View.

The Guerrero-Mayweather fight became a done deal Feb. 19, when Mayweather’s camp announced a record six-fight deal with Showtime.
