The Hollister High defense rested its case Thursday at Piedmont Hills as the Baler boys soccer contingent blanked the Pirates 3-0 in a non-league match.
It was the second consecutive shutout by the Balers (3-0-1) in as many days. The Pirates are 0-4-1.
The Balers, who were playing their third match in three days, were sluggish at the start. They soon were in high gear, scoring at the 31-minute mark on a header from new senior arrival Jonathan Alouso. Alouso headed in a volley from Brian Vargas, who has been at the heart of nearly every Baler goal this embryonic season.
Up 1-0 in the second half, Alouso was on the scoring end of a long ball feed from Willie Sanchez as Alouso put the shot in the corner of the net for 2-0 Balers.
The Pirates countered with a four-shot barrage, but Baler goalie Jorge Medina staved off all challenges.
Vargas took a perfect ball from sophomore midhalf Daniel Laguna and capped off the Baler scoring for the afternoon.
The Baler offense outshot the Pirates 14-6 for the match.
The Balers were without the services of Elias Barocio (separated shoulder), while Isidro Trujillo (forearm) and Geraldo Lostanau (ankle) saw limited duty do to injuries.
The Baler junior varsity won by forfeit.
Pending a typhoon, the Balers are at Palo Alto Saturday at 1:15 p.m.
