Organizers of a charter school in Gilroy are interested in opening a similar school in Hollister and will be holding an open house May 23. Gilroy Prep School opened in the fall of 2011. Over the next five years, the residents who opened the Gilroy charter school have a goal of opening charter schools in each Central Coast Community, including Hollister.
Organizers already have met with officials at the Hollister School District, while school officials from the area are expected to attend the open house at the Gilroy charter school, located at 277 IOOF Ave.
The event is “for people to come and see why our school is different.” It is set for 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., with brunch included.

Hollister Airshow
The Hollister Airshow is May 26 and 27, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a variety of entertaining aircraft performers. The event will feature aerobatics, warbirds, aircraft displays, a fly-in, vendors and a prize drawing. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children and parking is $5. Memorial Day motorcycle run
The American Legion Riders No. 69, of San Benito, is sponsoring a Memorial Day weekend motorcycle event May 27. The intent of the run is to focus on the monuments and memorials that have been dedicated to the memory of those in the community that have made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom enjoyed today. The event will also recognize the individuals or groups who erected monuments in the community, including Edward Matthews, the Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 9242 and the American Legion No. 69. The event begins at noon.

Kite Day
The 11th Annual Family Kite Day will be held at Pacheco State Park, June 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Other fun activities include a “Make Your Own Kite Free” table and free face painting as well as pie eating contests and bubble gum blowing contests. Plus, there will be interesting tables to check out, including nature tables, a sun and wind table and craft tables. Families are encouraged to bring a kite, hats and/or sunscreen, drinking water, lawn chairs and a picnic lunch. It may be cool and windy or very hot. Hot Dog Heaven from Los Banos will sell lunches. There is a $5 state park day use fee per car.

Rodeo entries
Entries are now open for the 79th annual San Benito County Rodeo and Saddle Horse Show. Mail in or drop by the Bolado Park Office. Those interested in advertising in the June program or sponsoring an award for an event should contact the office.

Prevention Plus

Preschool picnic
The Presbyterian Preschool will host its end-of-year picnic May 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. the event will include games for the children, jump houses, raffle items and a bake sale. School book fair
The San Juan School Scholastic Bookfair is May 17-25. The fair will be open every weekday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Special events include Donuts for Dads, May 22, at 7:30 a.m., a family fun night May 23, from 2:30 to 7 p.m., and Maui Muffins for Moms, May 24, at 7:30 a.m. The fair will offer books for sale as well as games and drawings as money is raised for the San Juan School Library.
