2009 U.S. Open runner-up Ricky Barnes among latest to commit to Frys.com Open
Ricky Barnes, the 2002 U.S. Amateur Champion, 2009 U.S. Open runner-up and 64th-ranked golfer on the Official World Golf Rankings, has committed to play in the 2010 Frys.com Open.
Barnes, who is originally from Stockton, is in the midst of his best year on the PGA Tour. He has made 16 of 19 cuts, has finished in the top-10 six times and has earned $1,704,668, placing him 22nd on the 2010 PGA Tour money list.
Also committing to the field on Tuesday was three-time PGA Tour winner and 2008 Frys.com Open champion Cameron Beckman; five-time PGA Tour winner Rocco Mediate and one-time PGA Tour winner Charley Hoffman.
The list of committed players also includes a number top PGA Tour players, including the 47th ranked player on the 2010 PGA Tour money list Brendon de Jonge; one-time PGA Tour winner Ryuiji Imada; 16th ranked player on the 2010 PGA Tour money list and one-time Tour winner Bo Van Pelt and three-time PGA Tour winner Carl Pettersson.
PGA Tour members have until 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8, to commit to play in the Frys.com Open. Eligible players are assigned one of 38 PGA Tour priority rankings based on past performances on the PGA Tour. The field will continue to change as players with better priority rankings commit to play in the Frys.com Open.
The Frys.com Open is part of the PGA Tour’s Fall Series and features a full-field (132 players), four-day tournament with a $5 million purse and a $900,000 payout to the winner. The tournament will be played Oct. 11-17 at CordeValle in San Martin, located just 25 minutes south of title sponsor Fry’s Electronics headquarters in San Jose.

Indians call up GHS grad Gimenez
Gilroy High graduate Chris Gimenez was called up from Triple-A Columbus on Saturday.
Gimenez, 27, who played 45 games with Cleveland last year, began this season in the minors where he collected a .276 batting average with nine home runs and 32 RBI in 55 games. Gimenez has been versatile in the field, seeing action at catcher, first base and in the outfield this season for Columbus. He hit .304 with runners in scoring position with Columbus.
The former Mustang went 1 of 4 and played catcher on Sunday in his first game after the call-up.
Nakagawa named baseball coach at St. Francis CCC
Ken Nakagawa was named to the athletic staff at St. Francis Central Coast Catholic High School as head baseball coach last week.
Nakagawa, 43, most recently served as head instructor for the nationally-ranked Waves Baseball Academy. During his two-decade coaching career, he’s developed athletes from Little League to the university level.
“I believe we have a good foundation of quality athletes at St. Francis,” Nakagawa said. “They just need that re-enforcement that they can win. Baskeball’s built its tradition at St. Francis. Football’s done the job. I believe we can do the same with baseball. I think they’re going to be competitive right away.”
Nakagawa’s positive outlook is at the core of his approach to coaching.
“It’s not just about baseball,” he said, “it’s about life, making them productive members of society.”
Coaching changes made at Gilroy High
Gilroy High School announced two coaching changes last week that will affect both the boys basketball and track and field teams.
Matt Tait, 32, was named the new head coach of the boys basketball team, which went 19-7 last year under Jeremy Dirks.
Tait previously coached at Monta Vista, where he led the Cupertino high school to four straight playoff appearances.
Meanwhile, track coach Jeff Myers stepped down after five seasons at the helm in Gilroy, where he recently led the girls team to a Tri-County Athletic League title.
Tri County Running Club now under way
The Tri County Running Club recently kicked off its 2010 summer season at Manzanita Park in Prunedale, and will meet three times a week through July 30.
The distance running club, which is coached by Jess Morales of San Benito cross country and Gustavo Ibarra of North Monterey County track and field, will meet every Monday at Manzanita Park in Prunedale, every Wednesday at Toro Park in Salinas and every Friday at Nisene Marks Park in Aptos. Each meet will be held at 9 a.m.
There will also be an afternoon session at San Benito High in Hollister at 4 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
The club is open to all runners, from elementary school to college to even open runners. Cost is $75 ($25 for kids 12 and under) and includes a club T-shirt and uniform use. This is the 10th season of the club, which had approximately 70 runners last season.

Catalyst Soccer coming to Hollister
Catalyst Soccer: Player and Coach Development Programs, will hold a summer session at Veterans Memorial Park in Hollister in August.
A two-session World Cup Soccer Camp will be held Aug. 2-6 at Vets Park for boys and girls ages 4-14, with a Super FUNdamentals (boys and girls, ages 6-14) session scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon, and a Little Skillsbuilders (boys and girls, ages 4-6) session slated from 9:30 to 11 a.m.
Cost is $125 for Super FUNdamentals and $75 for the Little Skillsbuilders.

Girls volleyball camp slated for July
The Tri-County Girls High School Volleyball Camp will be held July 21-23 at North Salinas High.
The camp, which is for girls in grades 9 to 12, will run from 1 to 8 p.m. each day.
Cost is $125 and includes a long-sleeve T-shirt and 18 hours of camp instruction.

The CSUMB Baseball Summer Camp schedule was recently announced, and includes several different camps for several different age levels.
There are seven different camps, which will run through July for ages 7-18.

Ridgemark to host junior clinics, tournaments in July
The Ridgemark Golf and Country Club announced its Junior Golf Club clinic schedule for 2010.
The junior clinics are for golfers 6-18. Golfers must pay in advance when signing up, and class size will be no more than 25 kids per class. Cost is $100 per child.
The fifth of five junior clinics is scheduled for July 20-22 from 1 to 4 p.m.
There are also several junior tournaments slated, with the next scheduled tournament set for Aug. 14 at 3 p.m.
No sign-up is necessary for the tournaments. Interested golfers can sign up on the day of the event, at least 15 minutes prior to tee time, and choose between four-, six- or nine-hole tournaments.

San Juan Oaks announces junior program, Club ‘Boom Boom’
The San Juan Oaks Golf Club is proud to present our junior program, Club “Boom Boom.” Inspired by San Juan Oaks Course Designer, Fred Couples, our junior program is offered for youth ages 6-17 years old.
Juniors pay $5 for green fees Monday through Friday after 2:30 p.m. with an accompanying adult who pays $35 (cart fees not included), and pay $10 for greens fees Saturday, Sunday and on holidays after 2:30 p.m. when playing with an accompanying adult who pays $45 (cart fees not included).
Members receive $5 off our normal junior rate good anytime Monday through Friday, and receive a small bucket of range balls for only $2 every day (up to two small buckets per day).
Junior members also receive a 10 percent discount on private golf lessons with our San Juan Oaks teaching staff, while an end-of-the-year golf clinic will cover aspects like full swing, short-game shots, putting and a rules seminar followed by a no-host barbecue luncheon.
A Club “Boom Boom” Junior cap with the San Juan Oaks logo, a Club “Boom Boom” sleeve of golf balls and beginner rules book will be supplied at time of sign up.

Dirty Gears MTB XC Series continues in July
South Valley Endurance will continue with its final 2010 mountain bike race series at Wilder Ranch State Park on July 17.
The newly titled series, Dirty Gears MTB XC, consists of four races open to all levels of mountain bikers. The inaugural race took place at Fort Ord State Park in Salinas on Feb. 21.
The series points will be tracked, giving riders the opportunity to either receive a unique handcrafted award, or just enjoy local trails and collect some prizes.
