Audra Brown hit two home runs, including a grand slam in extra innings, to power the Gavilan softball team past College of San Mateo 9-3 Wednesday, and supplied the Rams with their fifth league win in the last six games.
Alicia Reese added a pair of hits as did Mikhaela Osuna, whose RBI single in the seventh tied the game 3-3 and eventually sent the contest to extras.
“When San Mateo came back to tie the game, they didn’t let that get them down,” manager Nikki Dequin said. “We definitely came right back to do what we had to do, both offensively and defensively.”
Danielle Hernandez pitched an eight-inning complete game, allowed three runs on six hits and struck out four.
In the eighth, San Mateo allowed two runs on pass balls before Brown connected for her grand slam, her fifth RBI of the game.
Brown’s solo homer came in the second inning and supplied Gavilan with a 2-0 lead. San Mateo scored three times in the fifth.
The Rams are now 10-7 in the Coast Conference – South after picking up a 3-2 victory at San Francisco City College on Tuesday.
Hernandez once again pitched a complete game, allowing two runs (both unearned) on three hits. She struck out nine.
Brown hit an RBI triple in the second inning and teammate Cristine Vasquez followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.
The Rams added a crucial insurance run in the sixth when Amanda Ross singled to score Reese from second base. Gavilan’s three-run edge was much needed, though, as SFCC plated two runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 3-2.
“A great week,” manager Nikki Dequin said. “They played well both days.
“Hopefully, we can fight like this and play like this every game.”
Gavilan (28-15) will play Thursday at Foothill.
