Leave it to Zeke Lopez to find boxing talent in the Hollister area. Lopez, who founded the Bulldog Boxing Club over 11 years ago, has three talented novices that he’ll unleash at a boxing show on June 28 in Merced. All three fighters will be making their boxing debut.

Age before youth, Lopez likes Renato Mejia, a 25 year-old, 135-pounder.

“He is strong,” said Lopez of Mejia. “He’s a hard puncher and he’s quick. Danny Hernandez was sparring with him Wednesday and he said that Mejia ‘hit like a mule’.” Mejia is 5-10. He’s tall. He still has more weight to lose.”

Also Merced-bound is Anthony G. DeLaCerda, a 13 year-old Rancho San Justo student who wears size 13 shoes. DeLaCerda weighs 118 pounds.

“This will be a good test for DeLaCerda,” said Lopez. “He’s tall and has a good jab.”

And Lopez really likes George Hernandez, a 10 year-old student at Ladd Lane School.

“Jorge can box,” said Lopez. “He’s not too fast, but he’s smart and hits hard.”

Lopez, who has about 15 to 20 fighters in his camp, plans on taking six to seven kids to Reno on July 12.

“They want to have us fight on an Indian reservation,” said Lopez. “There’s a rodeo and a parade and we’ll be part of a boxing show.”

Lopez, who runs his club on the charity of others, said he’s happy with his current gym behind Leatherback Company. His practice facility could be improved, though.

“It’s too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter,” said Lopez. “I see the city building new fields and skateboard parks and we’re still in the same old building.”

Lopez said he could also use some new boxing equipment.

“We could use $5,000 to help towards new equipment,” said Lopez.
