Aviation maintenance classes begin
Gavilan College will be offering aviation maintenance classes
beginning Aug. 11. The program is accredited by the Federal
Aviation Administration and leads to a Certificate of Achievement
(42-43 units) or an Associate of Science degree (70 units) for
completion of the two-year program. The FAA requires a minimum of
1,150 hours of instruction, which will include both academic and
shop experience, to qualify for either an airframe license or a
powerplant license.
Skills taught include welding, sheet metal, electrical systems,
hydraulics, fuel systems and automotive repair. The course is
housed at the Gilroy campus, with plans to move to the San Martin
Airport in 2012. New students must submit an application, take an
assessment test, and complete online or in-person orientation prior
to meeting with a counselor. Due to high demand, the process may
take 7-10 days so students are advised to register early. Fees are
$36 a unit.
