Almost all of the San Benito fall sports team were in action
over the weekend. The Baler girls volleyball team journeyed to the
Reno Invitational and went 4-3 for the weekend. The Balers defeated
Carson (Reno) in the first game on Friday in a close match 25-23,
13-25, 20-18. The Balers suffered losses to Homestead and Moapa
Valley (Las Vegas) to go 1-2 in pool play.
On Saturday, San Benito took care of Reno 25-13, 18-25, Del
Norte (Crescent City) 26-24, 25-10, and Santa Teresa (San Jose)
25-13, 25-23. The Balers fell to Galena (Reno) 19-25, 23-25 in its
final match of the weekend.

“We improved as the weekend went on,” said Baler head coach Chuck Schallhorn. “We’re young and have to get some more experience. I was really pleased with the balanced attack at the net.”

The Balers had four hitters with more than 20 kills for the tourney – Mallorie Wilson (22), Leslie Schipper (26), Melissa Moore (32) and Alyssa Fowles (29).

“The biggest thing the girls showed was their determination to fight out every match, no matter how far a hole they may have dug,” said Schallhorn. “They never gave up and played through some difficult matches. We learned a lot about team play. Wilson and Schipper dominated at the net.”

Setter Stephanie Mauro had 46 assists, while teammate Kathleen McCullough had 44 assists. Moore had a team-high 12 aces, while Fowles had nine aces. Wilson led in kill blocks with 13, while Schipper had nine kill blocks.

The Balers are at Branham in San Jose for a non-league match at 5:45 p.m…..

The Baler girls tennis team edged Seaside Friday 4-3, getting a big win at No. 1 doubles. Cathry Villarico and Megan Kirk rallied for a 2-6, 7-5, 8-6 victory for the Balers. Twins Sheila and Sheryl Overman won at No. 3 doubles 6-3, 6-3, while No. 2 doubles Becky Bonner and Mary Beth Miller were defeated 4-6, 6-2, 4-6.

Mary Von Urff won at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-3. Freshman Jamie Huston began her tennis career with a bang, winning 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Jill Merrigan and Tiffany Davies were downed at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.

The Balers have three matches this week – vs. Watsonville at Ridgemark Tuesday; at Harbor Wednesday and at Gonzales Friday. The Gonzales match was changed to a road match….

The Baler cross-country team had some fine performances at the Early Bird Invitational at North County on Saturday. The Baler boys ended up fifth overall after all divisions were tabulated, while the girls were 12th. Baler head coach Jess Morales was more excited about the 1-2-3 finish of his freshmen runners. Freshman Rigo Vasquez ran a torrid 17:24 to earn himself a spot on the varsity. Right behind Vasquez came Eddie Trujillo (17:31) and Alfredo Lopez (17:51). The Baler frosh placed second out of 40 schools.

Jonathan Rivera was top Baler senior, running a 16:36 on the 3.0-mile course for 13th place. Kyle Fowles ran a 17:59, while Kevin Vera clocked 18:36. The Balers had several runners in the frosh-soph boys division. Jeff Spencer ran well with a 17:40 for 14th place. Arturo Ceja (19:02), Kyle Ferguson (19:03), Kyle Bambrick (19:08), Albert Garibay (21:32) and Robbie Brooks (21:33) also fared well.

Jamie O’brian clocked 21:27 in the varsity girls division for 44th. Lee Ann Morales ran a 21:39, while Jamila Saqqa (22:40), Teralynn Hill (22:50) and Briana Colorado (25:30) ran good races, too. The Balers top freshman was Brittany Skareougos with a 23:37, earning her a spot on the varsity. Hannah Gunther led the JV runners with a 24:54.

“I was proud of all the runners because they didn’t complain,” said Jess Morales. “They all ran hard.”

The Balers are at the Ed Salas Invitational in Martinez this Saturday….

The Baler boys polo team went 2-1 in their own eight-team tourney, beating Pioneer 16-3 in one of their wins. The girls polo squad was at the Clovis Showdown, results n-a.

The Balers girls host Santa Catalina Wednesday, while the boys are at the Paly Invitational Saturday.
