The Voters First Act (Prop. 11) was passed by California voters in 2008. For the first time, a publicly appointed commission and not the members of the state legislature will redraw the CA Assembly, Senate and Board of Equalization districts. The CA Bureau of State Audits will select the members of the first CA Citizens Redistricting Commission (CRC). The CA CRC will include a total of fourteen members including five (5) Democrats, five (5) Republicans and four (4) of other political affiliations.
As of January 11, nearly 6,000 people statewide have apAsian, 4% Black and only 27% female. The CA Bureau of State Audits seeks qualified diverse applicants.
LULAC of San Benito County is a member of the Central Coast Redistricting Network. The Central Coast Redistricting Network, which hosted a Jan. 19 workshop on applying for the commission, includes civic, labor and social justice organizations from the six-county region including Monterey, San Benito, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz and Ventura Counties.
