Gilroy – Good defense wasn’t quite enough Friday to overcome good offense.

But Gavilan gave Cabrillo plenty to think about before succumbing to the Seahawks’ relentless front hitters. Riding the power of Treva Crocker and Annique Melese, and the blocking of 6-3 Bernie Erlach, Cabrillo won 30-20, 30-24, 28-30, 30-18.

And while the last game may have been the most decisive from a scoring standpoint, the Seahawks prevailed by scoring the last 15 points of the match.

In fact, the Rams (4-6) had their biggest lead of the evening in the fourth game, 17-10, on a Heather Harms block. After Cabrillo scored five straight points, Malie Ka’anapu’s kill gave Gavilan an 18-15 lead and its last points of the contest.

“I was very happy with the way we played defense,” Rams’ coach Stephanie Pascucci said. “For them to lose the first two games and then come back on fire for the third game says a lot about their character.”

Melissa Gaxiola had 18 digs, Shanna Silveira had 15 and Jenny Fowles 14 to lead the Gavilan defensive charge. Silveira had seven kills, 5-1 Janet Unciano had six kills, and Fowles had six kills and three aces in a strong all-around performance.

It wasn’t enough as Melese had 19 kills, Crocker had 16 kills and seven blocks, and Erlach had 12 blocks for Cabrillo (11-3). Jenelle Murray had 27 digs.

The Rams are in action today at the Merced Tournament.
