Cabrillo College is off to a fast start in the Coast Conference, and the Seahawks are doing it by playing opportunistic softball.
Take Thursday, for example, when Cabrillo was outhit by the Rams but took advantage when it had scoring opportunities in a 3-1 win in Aptos.
The Seahawks, who opened conference play by ripping Hartnell 10-0, found the going tougher against Gavilan. Cabrillo got an unearned run in the fourth, scored on Adriana Valdez’s double in the fifth, and, after a throwing error, scored on Amber Bryant’s base hit in the sixth.
The Rams (5-5 overall, 1-1 in conference) got their run in the sixth when Megan Smart singled, moved to second on Amanda Rosevear’s sacrifice bunt, went to third on an error and scored on Amanda Perez’s double. Smart had three hits and Perez had two.
Gavilan’s Jen McBain pitched a five-hitter. The ‘Hawks’ Ashley Campbell allowed six hits. The Rams stranded seven baserunners.
“Cabrillo was a little tougher team than we have seen,” Gavilan coach Nikki Dequin-Thompson said. “We beat ourselves. We had runners in scoring position but didn’t execute our plays. We can learn from this game.”
The Rams’ next game is 3pm Tuesday at Hartnell.
