‘Metaphor and Mystery’
The Galeria Tonantzin Center for Arts and Humanities will host the “Metaphor and Mystery” exhibit, with painted photographs by Kira Carillo Corser, Sept. 2-25, at 115 Third St., in San Juan Bautista. The San Juan State Historic Park will host Living History Days Sept. 3, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Meet mountain men, Civil War soldiers, Victorian ladies and more. White dove release
Central Coast Dove and the Hollister Veterans Post 9242 will host a Sept. 11 memorial at the Hollister Veterans Building, 649 San Benito St., in Hollister. The memorial begins at 11:30 a.m. with a dove release at noon. The event will feature the pledge of allegiance led by a Boy Scout troop, the national anthem, a prayer led by the Rev. Ardyss Golden, speakers from the fire department, the police department, the Red Cross and a rifle salute and taps by the VFW with “Amazing Grace” played on the bag pipes. Members of the American Legion Post No. 69 will sell hamburgers with chips and a drink for $3.50 or hot dogs with chips and a drink for $2.50, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and 12:15 p.m. to 3 p.m. as a fundraiser for the group. San Juan commemorates 9/11
The San Juan community will host a commemoration of the 10-year anniversary of Sept. 11, from 11 a.m. to noon at the State Historic Park, on Second Street. VFW Post 6359 and Boy Scout Troop 428 will place the flags. Commander Felipe Galvan will lead the pledge of allegiance, “The Star-Spangled Banner” will be sung by Maribel De Alba and the Mission bells will ring 10 times. David Rios will play taps and Cuco Chavez will give an invocation. Mayor Andy Moore will welcome the crowd and Luis Valdez will deliver a keynote address. Firefighters and police officers will participate, as will schools and other local organizations. Refreshments will be served.

‘Y’ hosts charity golf tourney
The YMCA of San Benito County and Hollister Rotary Club are hosting a charity golf tournament. For $130 per person, individuals can participate in the four-person scramble. The fee includes green fees, cart, range balls, lunch, dinner and awards. Condor Comeback 2011
The public is invited to attend Condor Comeback 2011 on the fee-free National Public Lands Day, Sept. 24, at Pinnacles National Monument. Up to two young California condors will be released for their first flight during the release celebration, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. No entrance fee will be charged. The Condor Comeback will feature two large flat panel video display screens that will carry a live, remote video feed from the backcountry condor facility to the Pinnacles Visitor Center. Visitors can watch the young condors in the facility pen and the first flight of any released birds. There will be speakers, informational and educational booths staffed by rangers and park partners, an activity booth for children, and a volunteer micro-trash pickup. The event will be held at the Pinnacles Visitor Center near the campground on the east side of the park, accessed from Hwy. 25 south of Hollister. Summer movies series
A summer movies series ends Sept. 30 at the San Juan Bautista Elementary soccer field, with a viewing of “Vertigo.” All viewings are free and start at sunset. All children must accompanied by a parent or guardian. No alcoholic beverages are permitted. The series is a collaboration of the Plaza History Association of San Juan Bautista State Historic Park and the San Juan Elementary home and school club. Earthbound Farms is a sponsor.
Ranger-led hikes along the Anza Trail
Guests can join rangers for hikes along the Anza Trail Sept. 30. The hikes begin near Old Stage Coach Road at 6 p.m. Hikers should dress in layers as the trail’s location is influenced by afternoon winds. It may be warmer in lower elevations and then cooler above. Please drink water and wear hiking or tennis shoes with good tread. The hike is scheduled early enough so that participants can enjoy the free summer movie series at the San Juan Bautista School soccer field and/or enjoy dinner at a local restaurant. The program is presented in partnership between the National Park Service, Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail and California State Park San Juan Bautista Historic Park. The Gerald Rawn Memorial Endowment Golf Tournament is Oct. 1, with registration beginning at 9 a.m., at Ridgemark Golf and Country Club.
