Market adds Art Nights, ‘black hogs’
The Hollister Downtown Certified Farmers’ Market has some fun, new additions—including a display of a special type of pork and Art Nights put on by the San Benito County Arts Council. The arts council will host the Art Nights theme at the first farmers markets of the month going forward through the September season. On this coming Wednesday, when the market is held each week on San Benito Street, local dance academies’ performances will be on display. And for that other addition? According to a newsletter from the Hollister Downtown Association, which puts on the weekly farmers market, a special kind of hog is at the events this summer as well. According to the recent HAD’s market newsletter: “Jack and Sara Kimmich of California Kurobuta are offering their pork at the Hollister Farmers’ Market. ‘Kurobuta’ means ‘black hog’ in Japanese, a nod toward the rare Berkshire breed that carries the name. The Kimmich’s livestock are raised without any corn or soy feed, growth hormones or antibiotics. Instead, the pigs are pastured, and their feed is supplemented with a varied diet of fruits and produce.”
