Alexandra Morris, a family care specialist with the Alzheimer’s Association for Northern California, speaks at the Caregiver University.

With the promise to be an “A Day of Learning and Sharing,” the third annual Caregiver University took place at the Hollister community center April 21.

The event was sponsored by Jovenes de Antaño Senior Services, the Seniors Council of Santa Cruz and San Benito Counties, Health Projects Center (Del Mar Caregiver Resource Center), the San Benito County United way and the Community Foundation for San Benito County. Attendees participated in workshops heard experts in the field of caregiving congratulate them for assuming the role of a Caregiver while offering guidance as to how to be an effective Caregiver and a valuable resource to others.

Throughout the day, great emphasis was placed on providing respite for oneself, during the course of assuming Caregiving duties.

A panel of professionals presented information ranging from long-term care issues, Medicare, in-home support and adult protective services, geriatric case management, strategies for supporting the needs for an individual living with Alzheimer’s, as well as providing an overview of the programs and services provided in San Benito County by Jovenes de Antaño Senior Services.

Panel members answered individual questions from the floor and were available to address an individual’s concerns, on a one-on-one basis. Translation services were provided through the use of individual head phones. A catered luncheon was donated by Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital.

Entertainment was provided by Grupo Folklorico Juvenil de Hollister, by children ranging in age from 3 to 15 years, under the direction of Lucy Rodriguez.

Plans are already being made for the Fourth Annual Caregiver University.
