Editor,

I just sat down to read my Wednesday paper and found your article Bringing Carpets Back To Life. I would expect a little investigation on your part as to what you were told about carpet cleaning.

First, there are many types of carpet cleaning available but the three referred to have not been explained properly. The article lists steam cleaning, chemical rinse and dry cleaning. Steam cleaning, though this is what most people call it, is actually hot water extraction. Second, chemical rinse isn’t even a cleaning – this it what you would do with hot water extraction. The third, dry cleaning, is out there but only a few people do this. The type of cleaning referenced in the article is what is truly called low-moisture cleaning, not dry cleaning or chemical cleaning.

You go on to say that steam cleaning does not dig deep into the carpet fiber, but this is just the opposite. Hot water extraction is the best for this and you don’t need to take my word on this. Just go to any of the big carpet mill sites and they will tell you the type of cleaning they recommend. They will also tell you what types to stay away from.

Then, as far as carpet protector goes – any carpet that comes with the protector on it from the mill is usually guaranteed for five years that the protection will not come off. It usually doesn’t. The only time you would see it come off is in a commercial use situation or if a bonnet machine is used on your carpet repeatedly.

The article can be very detrimental to carpet cleaners all over. Hot water extraction is the top method used by carpet cleaners because it is the best. We don’t buy $20,000 machines because we want to outdo each other. It is simply because it is the best way to clean carpet.
