Gavilan College lost a tough battle Friday night in Hayward to Chabot College, 47-42.

After trailing by 15 points, the Rams went on a 16-0 run to take the lead in the second half. Chabot and Gavilan are currently ranked No. 2 and No. 3 in the state in team defense.

“We figured it would be this type of game. Both teams like to dig in defensively and are patient on offense,” head coach Mike Girardi said. “We’re proud that our team fought until the end. This experience will help us for the rest of conference play. It’s a good lesson to never panic because anything can happen in a 40-minute game.”

Sophomore Nicole Donley led the Rams in scoring with 16 points. Sophomore Sabrina Murphy, freshman Jenn Tremblay and freshman Cynthia Pinto added eight points each.

Freshman Lacy Byers added two points and freshman Carolyn Beatty set key screens for layups during the Lady Rams’ big run.

Gavilan’s record is now 9-5 overall and 1-1 in Coast Conference North play.

The Lady Rams will play next at home versus Foothill College on Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 5:30 p.m.

The second game of the doubleheader will showcase the Gavilan College men’s team versus San Jose City College at 7:30 p.m.
