A $1 million construction project on Cienega Road that eliminates two dogleg turns is slated for completion by the end of this week.
The Cienega Road bypass, or realignment of two substandard roads, is set to open Monday and will eliminate the stretches that “are pretty much close to a 90-degree angle,” said county planner Arman Nazemi. The bypass will connect Cienega Road at the first dogleg with Hospital Road.
“You don’t have to go through the dogleg anymore in order to get from this point to Hospital Road,” he said.
That new stretch is about 3,500 feet long, Nazemi said.
The project started in mid-January. Salinas-based Don Chapin Co. had the $994,000 contract after submitting the lowest bid in late 2013. Funding came from impact fees, specifically those designated for the Montebello Estates subdivision.
The county is working with the chamber of commerce to organize a ribbon cutting ceremony for 11 a.m. that day.
Supervisor Jerry Muenzer spoke up after an update to the board from Nazemi on Tuesday.
“I just want to thank staff for all the work and diligence that went into this project,” Muenzer said, adding that residents in the housing developments there were “getting antsy about when it was going to happen.”
