The City of Hollister is holding an open application process for the city treasurer’s position.
At a June 5 council meeting, staff announced that former Treasurer Cecilia Rios moved out of the city. That means the city must fill the role.
In an interview with the Free Lance, City Manager Bill Avera said the city has begun an application process similar to April when Hollister Councilman Jim Gillio was selected to fill the open District 4 council seat vacated by Roy Sims.
“We’re trying to have interviews and make the appointment on June 26,” Avera said. “Hopefully word gets out on Friday that we’ll be accepting applications and the council will make their appointment.”
Avera said applications for the position can be submitted up to 4 p.m. June 21.
The treasurer position can be elected by the public or appointed by the city council, but council members chose to avoid a costly special election.
The treasurer’s primary role is to sign city checks. The pay is $200 per month with health insurance benefits.
City officials in November 2014 asked voters whether to make treasurer an appointed position. Voters said no with 58.6 percent of the vote against the move. In the same election, Rios defeated two others for the seat.
