Laura Trejo walks her daughters Laura, 8, and Priscila, 5, to school on the first day at Calaveras Elementary School August 18. The pair will be starting fourth grade and kindergarten.

Over the next two weeks, the city plans to install high-visibility crosswalks near two local schools.
It is part of a Safe Routes to Schools program funded by the Council of San Benito County Governments.
Pedestrians and drivers over the next couple of weeks can expect to see crews striping the high-visibility crosswalks, which give the right of way to pedestrians who enter the roadway.
“The striping will be water-based paint in the interim until grant funding can be obtained to construct curb extensions and restripe the crossings with permanent thermoplastic paint,” according to an announcement from the city.
Those crosswalks will be striped on Line Street, Westside Boulevard, Buena Vista Road and Central Avenue.
