Residents can get free microchips for their pets at an event this month, according to the police department.

The Hollister Police Department’s Animal Control Bureau will host a giveaway of 100 certificates for free microchips. The city received an anonymous donation of 100 microchips, according to the announcement.

The goal is to help reunite owners with their lost pets.

Residents on April 26 can pick up certificates for microchips at the Hollister Animal Shelter from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

According to the city, less than 2 percent of cats and just 17 percent of dogs entering shelters nationwide are reunited with owners. That is among eight to 12 million pets per year entering shelters.

The certificates are for residents of Hollister and San Benito County only.

With the microchips, the shelter or a veterinarian can call the national database to locate the owner.
