Former Baler J.C. Clayton and the BYU softball team had its season come to an end recently when it lost 7-5 to No. 14 Washington in the championship game of the Seattle Regional.
The Cougars, who finish their season with a 40-18 overall record, defeated No. 21 Auburn twice in the NCAA tournament’s regional play, but fell to Washington twice as well, including the two-run loss in the final on May 21.

Clayton, a 2009 graduate of San Benito High and current BYU sophomore, went 2 of 3 for the Cougars in the championship game of the Seattle Regional, scoring one run while knocking in another.
For the entire season, though, Clayton led all Cougars at the plate with a .373 batting average (66 of 177) and a team-high 66 hits, while also contributing 28 RBI and 37 runs scored.
Clayton was named Freshman of the Year in the Mountain West Conference last season.
Spencer Brann, UC Davis
Spencer Brann, a 2010 graduate of San Benito High who is currently competing for the UC Davis baseball team, will spend his summer months competing for the Kitsap Bluejackets of the West Coast Baseball League.
Based out of Kitsap, Wash., the team is expected to play a 48-game schedule through mid-August, in front of crowds that range from several hundred to nearly 1,500 per game. Games are played in Washington, Oregon and British Columbia, Canada.
Lizzy Gatto, Canisius College
Former San Benito High student and Canisius College junior Lizzy Gatto was named second team All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in softball last month.
The 2008 graduate of SBHS was selected by the conference’s coaches after she compiled a .319 batting average (38 of 119), which was fifth highest on the team. The former Haybaler also recorded eight doubles, four triples, 26 runs scored and 18 RBI, and was a perfect 21 of 21 on the base paths in 41 games for the Golden Griffins.
According to the school’s website, Gatto’s four triples were tied for second in the MAAC, while her 21 stolen bases were second on the team and third in the conference.
It was the second straight year in which Gatto has been selected All-MAAC.
In the classroom, Gatto was also awarded for her efforts when she was selected to the 2011 MAAC All-Academic Team.
Canisius finished its season with a 20-21 overall record, 7-9 in MAAC play.
