Former San Benito Lady Baler and current Utah State Aggie Emily Kortsen was named the American First Credit Union’s Student-Athlete of the Week for Oct. 12-18 on Monday, according to the school’s Web site.

The award was voted on by a state media panel.

Kortsen, a 2008 graduate of SBHS, helped the Utah State women’s volleyball team to a 2-0 record last week when she posted 23 kills, 25 digs and eight blocks in a pair of matches against Utah Valley and Fresno State.

This is the first time Kortsen, a sophomore opposite side hitter for the Aggies, has been named Student-Athlete of the Week at Utah State (12-8, 3-4 Western Athletic Conference).

On the season, Kortsen is hitting .251 and averaging 2.14 kills, 2.37 digs and .59 blocks per set — her kills and digs total is currently second on the team.

Kortsen, though, is just one of two players on the Aggies that hails from Hollister. Former Lady Baler Chelsea Fowles, an SBHS graduate of 2006, is the team’s starting setter, and has already accumulated 815 assists on the season — a 9.82 assists per set average.

Fowles, a junior, also leads the team with 24 service aces, and has racked up 118 digs, or 1.42 per set.

The two played in a nationally televised game on Monday night when Utah State battled Idaho on ESPN U, although the match was not complete by press time.

Closer to home, the Aggies will visit San Jose State on Nov. 5.

Match time is 7 p.m.

Former teammate Morgan O’Laughlin, who graduated from SBHS in 2006 and is currently attending Bentley, is averaging 1.00 kills per set for the Falcons, who are currently 12-10 overall, 7-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference.

O’Laughlin, a junior, had seven kills in two matches last week against Assumption and Saint Anselm — both of which were Bentley sweeps.

Meanwhile, Courtney Allen and the UNLV cross country team wrapped up their regular season last weekend at the Bronco Invitational, held at Baylands Park in Santa Clara.

Allen, a freshman at UNLV and 2009 graduate of SBHS, recorded a 19:38 to help lead the Rebels to a 16th-place team finish.

Allen’s time positioned her 126th overall out of some 156 runners at the 5K meet, and seventh on the Rebels.

Next up for UNLV will be the Mountain West Conference Championships on Oct. 31 in Provo, Utah.

At the Stanford Invitational last month in Palo Alto, Allen clocked a 24:32 on the 6K course.
