SAN JOSE
Senior second baseman for the San Jose State baseball team and former San Benito Haybaler Karson Klauer was recently named the 2010 Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament’s Most Valuable Player, as well as the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference’s Hitter of the Week, according to a statement issued by the school.
Klauer, a 2006 graduate of San Benito High, helped lead the Spartans to the inaugural Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament championship, where they defeated UC Davis in the title game by a 7-4 margin.
While San Jose State compiled a 4-1 record during the week, including a 3-1 mark during the Jack Gifford tournament, Klauer connected for a team-high .476 (10 of 21) batting average.
Starting all five games at second base, where he fielded all 24 of his chances cleanly, the Hollister native provided more team highs with six runs scored and 10 RBI, and shared team highs with one home run, two doubles and 15 total bases, according to the school’s Web site.
Moreover, Klauer slugged .714 and had a .522 on-base percentage. He didn’t strike out during the five-game stretch and walked twice.
During San Jose State’s 10-1 victory over visiting Southern Illinois, Klauer went 4 of 4 with five RBI — both tying single-game season highs for a Spartan this year.
The Hitter of the Week honor is the first for Klauer’s four-year career at San Jose State, and is the first for a Spartan in 2010, according to a statement.
Klauer is currently batting .321 (18 of 56) for the Spartans — third on the team — with seven runs scored, 13 RBI, a .429 slugging percentage and a .377 on-base percentage. The second baseman also boasts a .988 fielding percentage, with just one error in 80 chances.
The Spartans are currently 8-7 overall, with Western Athletic Conference play scheduled to begin April 9 with a four-game series at Louisiana Tech.
