Playing as a Cinderella team once again in the Northern California Super Regionals, San Jose City narrowly missed advancing to the State Final Four for the second straight year.
The No. 15-seeded Jaguars finished 1-2 in the double-elimination pool at the College of San Mateo with an 5-4 loss to No. 2 San Mateo on Friday, an 8-2 win against No. 5 Fresno on Saturday, and a 6-5 loss to No. 7 Sacramento on Sunday.
San Jose City, a team that includes seven prep baseball players from the South Valley, including Hollister’s Zach Canez and Kyle Zozaya, reached the Super Regionals for the second time in program history. They were a win short of making the Final Four a year ago.
“We played extremely well, just couldn’t get some breaks in those close games,” SJCC pitching coach Erik Wagle said in an e-mail Sunday. “All of the South Valley kids played well.”
Live Oak High alumnus Matthew Cummins had five hits and two RBI in the tournament, including a home run Sunday, a triple Saturday and a double Friday.
Sobrato graduate Danny Nelson had four hits and drove in a run, Gilroy native David Garcia doubled and plated two runs Sunday, and designated hitter Zach Canez of San Benito High had a double and two RBI Saturday.
Gilroy High’s Jacob Dexter struck out four, walked two, and scattered four runs on six hits in 5.2 innings against Sacramento.
The Jaguars qualified for the Super Regionals with a thrilling two-games-to-one upset over No. 1 Canada College in Regionals two weeks ago. Before that, they eliminated No. 17 Consumes River with a 4-3 victory on May 4.
San Jose City finished 23-20.
