Residents visit the booths at the YMCA's Healthy Kids Day April 21.

The YMCA had more than 500 members of the community join in celebrating Healthy Kids Day April 21. The annual event had more than 44 nonprofits and local businesses participating in the outdoor fair. They raffled off eight sports balls and offered the first day to sign up for summer camp. More spaces are available and those that sign up before May 15 will get a free camp T-shirt.

The YMCA partnered with the Police Activity League for the National Mentoring Day and the Child Abuse Prevention Council for the Blue Ribbon Fun Walk on the same day.

In a press release, the YMCA staff thanked all the volunteers who helped or participated in making Healthy Kids Day a fun day for youth and families.

Outdoor Club removes 500 pounds of litter

The San Benito High School Outdoor Club and Susan Bessette’s class from the Accelerated Achievement Academy spent April 21 cleaning up the San Benito River bed in celebration of Earth Day.

Outdoor Club advisor Jim Ostdick said despite the hot temperatures, the high school and elementary school students, teachers and parents cleaned up for two hours and removed an estimated 500 pounds of tires, household items, plastic food bags and bottles. The students found a stash of recently used spray paint cans from the watershed near the Fourth Street/San Juan Road Bridge.

The annual event was organized by Lisa Jensema of San Benito County Integrated Waste Management.
