The Safe Kids Coalition is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the prevention of unintentional childhood injury – the No. 1 killer of children ages 14 and under, according to the national Web site. Officials form various agencies in the community meet together and share information as well as resources for events, such as bicycle, pedestrian and fire safety.

Currently, Safe Kids is working with the California Highway Patrol to offer car seat check-ups throughout the year. Next week is National Car Seat Safety Week.

Also, at the meeting, Sam Perez with the county Health and Human Services Agency, brought up partnering with the Hollister Rotary. The Rotary wants to disseminate smoke detectors and is asking Safe Kids if they have any detectors to give Rotary members.

“This is better than sitting and catching dust,” said Colleen Conley, with the county Health and Human Services Agency. “We need to get them (smoke detectors) out in the community.”

The Safe Kids Coalition attendees decided to have the Rotary present their plan at the next meeting. Conley will also inventory the smoke detectors Safe Kids has.

Also, in conjunction with Bike Week May 17-21, Safe Kids is looking into giving helmets to officials with San Benito County Rideshare, who is planning a bike to school safety day and bike school day May 19 and 20.

The next meeting is March 3 at noon at Dona Esther’s in San Juan Bautista. For more information about the Safe Kids Coalition, call 637-5367 or e-mail
