Despite a generally slow day at the polls, one of the locations kept steady through the day because it included three separate precincts, while some of the voters surveyed by the Free Lance expressed the highest level of interest in the county sheriff race.

Rancho San Justo Middle School was busy because the polling place was used for three different precincts and was located within the jurisdiction of the District 3 race between Robert Rivas and incumbent Pat Loe.

But most voters, when asked, said the sheriff race was the most important subject in the election.

“It’s important to go vote for someone that’s not part of the good-old-boy network,” Hollister resident Nancy Varos said. “Sometimes it’s better to target someone from the outside.”

Her friend David Halstead agreed that the sheriff’s race was important but didn’t agree on whom to vote for.

“I’m pro-second amendment and that’s who I voted for,” he said.

But they both agreed that everyone needs to go out and vote.

“People are tired of politics as usually – there needs to be a change,” Varos said. “They all work for us and sometimes they forget about that.”

Voter Don Gauvreau agreed that people needed to go out and vote.

“I think it’s important to go out and vote,” he said. ‘It’s important to the local community.”

It was Gilroy teacher Kristen Borup’s first voting experience today but she voted because of how important the election is to the community, she said.

“This is important because a lot of things can affect me as a teacher,” she said.

The steady polls at Rancho San Justo Middle School haven’t correlated elsewhere. Overall, the polls have been slow, said head elections official Joe Paul Gonzalez earlier in the day.

“This has been my slowest election,” Gonzalez said.
