Both Hollister High singles players won their first matches of the Tri-County Athletic League tennis tournament Friday.

Both then became the victim of John Pettit of Salinas, regarded as the league’s best player.

The Balers’ No. 1 player, Glen Morris, was seeded fourth and drew a first round bye. In the second round, Morris defeated Jacob P. Mewski 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

Hollister’s No. 2 singles player, Michael Blake, scored a win, defeating Pat Finn of Palma 6-4, 6-1 before being eliminated by Pettit 6-0, 6-0.

Pettit then defeated Morris 6-0, 6-1 in a semifinal. Both Blake and Morris were playing their final matches of the year as both are seniors.

Rain came into play, knocking out Saturday’s action until today. The other semifinal in singles is to be played with the winner taking on Pettit in the final.

“It’s unfortunate that Morris drew Pettit,” said Baler coach Allen Barker. “Morris had defeated the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds and they had defeated him. But, he had the ability to beat them. No one will come close to Pettit in this tournament.”

The Balers had two doubles teams entered in the tournament. Pablo Andrad and Isidro Trujillo fell to a team from Gilroy 0-6, 3-6. Mario Zaragoza and Ryan Watson were defeated by a team from Salinas 2-6, 5-7.
