With newfound short game, Will Cross has been carding sub-70 scores
Will Cross says it’s his putting.
“I’ve been on the range, working with different clubs,” he said, “but my putting has been really good lately.”
An incoming junior at San Benito High School, Cross has shed several strokes off his game recently. During a round earlier this week at the Salinas Golf and Country Club, where he was competing in the 54th Annual Charles Culver Memorial Junior Masters, Cross recorded just seven putts through his first five holes.
“I’ve been making putts like crazy,” he said.
And his short game seems to be paying off in the long run.
Cross carded a two-round score of 144 (68-76) to take second place at the Junior Masters earlier this week – he finished runner-up in a playoff after completing his round tied for first. Last week, the junior golfer shot a 4-under 68 (34-34) at the Fourth Annual Bill Dougherty Memorial Junior Golf Tournament, held at the Yolo Fliers Golf and Country Club in Woodland on July 10.
“I really feel like that was my breakout round,” said Cross, whose 68 last week was three strokes better than his nearest competitor.
The low round at Yolo not only placed Cross first among the 35 other golfers in his 16- and 17-year-old age group, but first overall among the 135 other golfers competing in the tournament.
“The greens were really nice,” he said. “Everything was flowing that day. Everything was going my way.”
Carding a 76 at the Central Coast Section Regional in May, a score that placed him just one stroke short of advancing to the championship round, Cross’ improvement on the putting green should certainly come in handy over the next two years.
“I’ve been playing really good during the offseason,” he said.
First Tee Open
Cross’ teammate at San Benito High School, Nathan Winn, is currently playing at the Shadow Valley Country Club in Rogers, Ark., where he is competing for an opportunity to play in the Wal-Mart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach in August.
The sixth annual Wal-Mart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, a nationally televised Champions Tour tournament, takes place Aug. 31-Sept. 6.
