Gilroy – It wasn’t the real thing, but finally football was back.

San Benito, Gilroy, Lincoln and North Salinas high schools all took to the field at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex Friday night in what was the first chance any of the Haybaler players had to put a lick on someone not wearing red and white. Each team scrimmaged one another for 15 plays on offense as well as defense. For the players who have been getting grilled by coaches in practice, it was nice to finally put some plays in action.

Taking on Gilroy, Lincoln and North Salinas, in that order, the ‘Balers showcased a toned down version of its Wing-T formation offense, which looks like it will be able to move the ball against most defenses. Quarterback Ronnie Fhurong had several nice runs and showed good awareness when scrambling out of the pocket. Still, his accuracy will need to more precise once games begin to count.

Head coach Chris Cameron was lukewarm in assessing his team’s performance.

“We played OK, nothing spectacular,” he said. “At times we looked real good, at times we didn’t look real good. Some players had the fire in their eyes while others were a little bit in shock of the pace and intensity of the game.”

The team’s night got off to a fast start with the offense scoring twice against Gilroy. However, the same group hit a speed bump against Lincoln by giving up an interception on the goal line. The ‘Balers defense also gave up a 40-yard touchdown run against North Salinas.

All in all, though, Cameron said the scrimmage was a positive as the team heads into its first game at home on Friday against Milpitas.

“Number one, we got out of their healthy,” he said. “Number two is we watched kids get after it.”
