After waking up from their post-feast Thanksgiving slumber this week, local residents and families are invited by the Hollister Downtown Association to celebrate the holidays with the annual Lights On and Project Dec-A-Tree events.

The celebration starts with a full day’s schedule of activities at 9am Nov. 30 in downtown Hollister. But many local youth groups, nonprofits, families and businesses have been preparing for weeks—particularly for the Project Dec-A-Tree festivities.

Started in 1994 in Hollister, Project Dec-A-Tree invites local groups and organizations to decorate dozens of fresh cut Christmas trees for local families in need. The trees—a total of 35 this year—are donated by Bourdet’s Choose & Cut Christmas Tree Farm, displayed on the lawn of the Veterans Memorial Building plaza and then decorated by the designated groups the morning of the Lights On celebration.

Decorating starts at 9am Nov. 30, and even the tree dressing tasks often draw a crowd of spectators. After they are fully decorated, the trees remain on display through the weekend and are then picked up on Dec. 2 for donation to local families to display in their homes throughout San Benito County.

Hollister Downtown Association Event Manager Teri Escamilla said the Project Dec-A-Tree decorators and recipients are selected weeks in advance of the Nov. 30 event. The association works with local nonprofit service organizations to identify families to whom to donate the decorated trees.

Additional Lights On events on Nov. 30 include a holiday boutique, food vendors, photos with Santa and a holiday parade that starts at 5:30pm.
