A resident reported finding a decomposed body in Aromas on Monday afternoon, while an autopsy did not reveal a cause of death or help with the identity.

The reporting resident told deputies he had been walking on Cannon Road collecting wood for a home project when he discovered the body off the side of the street, near Chateau Drive. The resident showed investigators the location of the body. It was within 30 feet of the road, said sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Tony Lamonica.

Investigators went to the scene for follow-up examination, collection of evidence and removal of the body. The autopsy performed Wednesday did not reveal any clues to how the person died, an identity or definitive sex.

Authorities are sending evidence to a lab to determine how long the person may have been there. Lamonica said the body was there for at least two weeks, though. He said it is “definitely not” a 16-year-old Gilroy girl who recently ran away and was reported missing.

“I don’t have any information on the guy at all,” Lamonica said.

The sheriff’s office has not called it a homicide case due to unclear evidence. That area of Aromas is heavily wooded and about a half-mile north of Highway 101. The body was found within 30 feet of the road.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at (831) 636-4080.
