Anzar’s goal Tuesday against powerhouse Carmel was to keep the game close.
Thus, the Hawks felt good after their 9-0 loss to the Padres, who have won the last two Central Coast Section Division III titles.
“After this game today, I think the freshman and sophomores got a glimpse of what to look forward to,” Anzar coach Andrew Barragan said. “We only struck out twice, we were putting the ball in play. It was more of a confidence booster for the underclassmen.”
Carmel scored four runs in the first, but the Hawks tightened up after that. Anzar kept the Padres off the board until the fifth, when they finally put the game away with five runs.
“Considering they’ve been beating up everybody, it wasn’t too bad,” Barragan said.
Anzar finished with four hits on the day.
After traveling to face Carmel on Thursday, the Hawks finish the season next week with a pair of games against Robert Louis Stevenson.
“We hope to at least pull one out at home against RLS,” Barragan said. “They’re a tough team as well, but I think maybe we can squeak one out.”
