Eric Diaz Jr. fanned 10 Gilroy batters and yielded just two hits as Hollister High blanked the Mustangs on the road Wednesday 4-0.
The Balers (7-3, 2-1 Tri-County Athletic League) have the Mustangs for a game Friday at 3:30 p.m.
Diaz Jr. (3-2) was 2-for-4 and had help from Nathan Rowe, who went 2-4 with a double. Gordon Ross had two RBI on fielder’s choice ground outs. The Balers had eight hits as a team.
“We had some opportunities to break the game open, but couldn’t,” said Baler head coach Neal Andrade. “Overall, it was a solid effort.”
The Mustangs booted the ball to the tune of five errors.
In other Tri-County Athletic League scores, Salinas topped Palma 7-3 to take sole possession of first place, while the Acorns shutout North Salinas 11-0 to create a three-way tie for second.
JV score: Hollister 4, Gilroy 0. Breyon Canez went the distance and faced just two batters over the minimum, giving up just three hits. Canez struck out six and walked one.
The game ended on a Geno Fata to Kris Bittner to Kyle Sharp double play.
Offensively, the Balers were led by Seth Hudson, who went 2-3, with a double, stolen base and and RBI. Karson Klauer added a double, while Gabe Gaitan had two stolen bases and an RBI.
