Countywide garage sale

by Oct. 12. Participants will be emailed a list of tips for a successful garage sale, inventory sheets and a directory of reuse organizations who accept donations after the sale. Addresses will be listed in fliers available on Oct. 19 at several locations in Hollister, San Juan Bautista, Aromas and Paicines.
The annual event is sponsored by the County of San Benito Integrated Waste Management Regional Agency. The goal is to promote the idea of reuse, conserved landfill space and avoid wasting valuable resources. Local authors hold book signing
Peter Sonne and Joseph M. McMahon will host a book signing of the recently released “Hollister (Images of America.) The paperback includes historical photos of San Benito County from the San Benito County Historical Society as well as the private collections of long-time residents. They will be at the San Benito County Fair Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. in the San Benito Bene booth to sell and sign books. The book will be available for sale locally at the Plaza History Gift Shop at the Plaza Hotel in San Juan, the San Juan Bautista State Historic Park, San Benito Bene, McKinnon Lumber, Ranchers Feed, Pennywise and Ace Hardware. It is also available at Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble bookstores.
Additional book signings are still in the works, including one at Barnes and Noble in Gilroy on Oct. 21, with a time to be announced and at local wineries in San Benito, with dates and times to be announced.
The San Benito County Chapter of California Retired Teachers will hold its next business meeting Oct. 3 at the San Juan Oaks Country Club. The meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by a social time and buffet lunch at noon. Joyce Medeiros will speak about state propositions 30 and 31. Edwina Young and Rebecca Salinas will do a presentation on Cuba.
Library to accept passport apps
The San Benito County Free Library will begin accepting passport applications on Oct. 3 on behalf of the U.S. Department of State. Residents who are planning international travel may call to schedule an appointment to complete the application on Sept. 24 by calling Betty, the community librarian, during the library’s open hours. St. Luke’s has openings for after school program
St. Luke’s Episcopal Church has openings in its after school program. Linda Smith, a retired principal, runs the program. It provides individualized tutoring and after school homework assistance for children. There are some scholarships available, provided by the Community Foundation for San Benito County. Chamberlain’s seeks volunteers
Chamberlain’s Children Center is seeking volunteers for a mentor program. The nonprofit is looking for adult mentors to work with foster children in a supportive and enriching one-on-one relationship that will aid in developing self-esteem, self-confidence and a sense of community.
