Parker Berry, 5, releases a dove with the help from his grandma Jeanne Berry Tuesday evening at the Veterans Memorial Building to kick off the Relay for Life activities.

The Relay For Life committee hosted the annual “Paint the Town Purple” Day Tuesday to recognize community members who have survived cancer. At 5:30 p.m., a group gathered at the Veterans Memorial Building for a dove release to celebrate, honor and remember those affected by cancer. On the same day, Tres Pinos School students held a Relay Recess to raise money for the American Cancer Society and awareness about prevention strategies.

The Relay For Life committee is gearing up for the annual cancer fundraiser. The Hollister event is Aug. 4, starting at 11 a.m. at the Andy Hardin Field at San Benito High School. Those interested in getting involved can form a team or donate to an existing team. Team leaders meet the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Methodist Church. More teams are welcome to join the efforts and the group is especially looking at getting cancer survivors involved. Residents can email
