A 70-year-old Hollister man was airlifted Monday “as a precaution” from the accident scene at Airline Highway and Sunnyslope Road that prompted a brief traffic closure.

The accident occurred shortly before 9 a.m. when a 46-year-old Hollister woman driving a 2004 Ford Explorer northbound on the bypass rear-ended the man driving a 1997 GMC truck while it was stopped at the lighted intersection, said Capt. Carlos Reynoso with the Hollister Police Department. The woman apparently passed out shortly before the intersection and hit the truck from behind, according to police.

“She doesn’t remember what happened,” Reynoso said. “It wasn’t alcohol related.”

Both drivers sustained injuries, and emergency responders airlifted the man to a Bay Area hospital as a precaution, Reynoso said. There were no life-threatening injuries for either driver, he said. The Calstar helicopter landed on Prospect Avenue nearby, while police closed off traffic for about 10 minutes.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts, and Reynoso said police did not cite the woman.
