A 4.2-magnitude earthquake hit near the Hollister area Tuesday afternoon followed by a 2.9-magnitude aftershock, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The quakes were the latest in a string of seismic activity in the Hollister area. Since Sunday, there have been eight earthquakes registering with a magnitude of at least 3.0, according to the Southern California Earthquake Data Center.
The biggest quake in the bunch Tuesday afternoon hit at 2:38 p.m. and rolled on, with a second temblor registered at 2.9-magnitude about 10 seconds after the first one and several others after those. They were centered about eight miles south-southeast of Ridgemark Golf & Country Club, according to the USGS.
The biggest quake was at a depth of about four miles with the second about three miles deep, according to the USGS. People online reported feeling them as far north as the San Francisco Bay Area.
A sheriff’s deputy queried by the Free Lance said the office had not received any calls related to the earthquakes as of about 3 p.m.
That 4.2-magnitude temblor came after a 3.3-magnitude quake that occurred shortly before 6 a.m. and was centered 16 miles northeast of Hollister.
