The board of the Economic Development Corp. of San Benito County today chose a top candidate for the expanded executive director role with whom negotiations are set to begin.

The 15-member EDC board chose its finalist after a committee reviewed resumes and whittled the list to five people, said George Lewis, EDC board president. Two panels comprised of 11 people then interviewed those candidates and further narrowed the list to three applicants, one of whom got a different job before final talks with the EDC to pick the top choice.

“The board really felt a number of candidates could have served well,” Lewis said.

The board won’t announce a finalist’s name until a contract is signed, he said.

The new director, expected to carry a larger load as San Benito County prospectively grows and recruits new businesses here, will succeed the retiring Al Martinez.

Lewis said he hopes the EDC can have the new director on the job by September.

“It’s really great to have come this far and hopefully be in a position to have somebody on board,” he said.
