John Ellis shoots a 77 after day one of the U.S. Open

Live Oak graduate John Ellis carded a 6-over 77 after the first day of the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego on Thursday.

Ellis, who also attended Gavilan College and the University of Oregon, double-bogeyed No. 14 and No. 3 in the first round, and bogeyed No. 1 and No. 7 as well.

Otherwise, Ellis shot par for the remaining holes.

Justin Hicks and Kevin Streelman are on top of the leaderboard with 3-under 68’s.

Tiger Woods is at 1-over 72 and Phil Mickelson is even after the first 18 holes.

Ellis will tee off from the first hole Friday, at approximately 9:12 a.m.
