From the bleachers: A fan’s perspective

I went to my first Major League baseball game when I was 4 years old. The San Francisco Giants beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 in 10 innings, my uncle bought me a foam finger and the experience turned me into a lifelong Giants fan.

I went to my first football game when I was only 2 months old. Granted it was only a Morgan Hill Raiders Pop Warner football game, but it was still a football game.

When I was a toddler, I got in trouble once at a restaurant for making the sugar packets play football. Almost every picture of me from when I was little shows me wearing sports apparel of all types. My toy dinosaurs were not used for eating each other but for tackling each other in a game of football. And growing up I used to call the NFL’s Miami Dolphins “Mama’s-ami” because when I asked my mom which team was playing, I heard her reply as “My Ami.”

Sports have been such a big part of my life that today, if asked, I would say that my love for sports is a major aspect of my personality. It is this love for sports that I hope to bring to you, courtesy of the Weekend Pinnacle.

Writing about athletes and the games they play has been something I’ve thought about doing ever since I was old enough to read my first Sports Illustrated magazine. They have gotten to cover some pretty amazing events, and I think it is a privilege to be allowed to do so.

With this opportunity I now have, I hope to help increase local coverage in the Pinnacle’s sports section with stories and columns about any local sports. I plan to be a fixture at as many Little League, Pop Warner and recreational games as possible.

When I played baseball for the Morgan Hill Pony League, I loved it when I found my name in the paper. It is such a kick to look back at all of those newspaper clippings and relive those game moments. I want to give that same opportunity to the kids of San Benito County.

My goal is to help John Bagley, the Pinnacle’s sports editor, cover as many different sports as we can, such as recreational soccer, softball, and basketball.

I would also like to follow high school sports and athletes. High school sports are an important aspect of the San Benito community and should continue to be an important part of the sports section. Many athletes deserve recognition for the achievements both academically and on the playing field and I would love to be part of making that happen.

Alternative sports such as motocross, skateboarding, martial arts and street hockey are also popular in our community, and I would enjoy providing readers with a glimpse of these activities.

Often overlooked are activities such as biking, hiking – even walking. I want to make myself available to anyone interested in these activities. There are some plans to update the Pinnacle’s sports section with briefs, a sports calendar, popular hiking/walking trails and even health and fitness stories.

Through the occasional column, I will share my thoughts on a variety of subjects, from a local athlete doing something remarkable to professional sports as well. A sports section wouldn’t be complete without mention of the athletes and teams we look to for inspiration. The San Jose Sharks, for example, are currently in the NHL’s playoffs, the Golden State Warriors are on the brink of their first NBA playoff berth in 13 years, and the San Francisco Giants are stinking up a storm in the National League West. Man! Bay area sports are full of life in the middle of April.

A love of sports, both professional and recreational, can bring people together. I hope to play a little role in bringing this community a bit closer to each other by showing just how much game we all have.
