Six-hundred dollars was awarded to six Aromas School fourth-graders for winning the statewide art contest.

The six students from Aromas won because of their original design illustrating a “Truck of the Future” – the HOVER-TRUCK. The vehicle hovers above land and water. The truck also comes to the aid of animals and people in emergencies, plants seeds for farmers and never runs out of gas.

Features on the HOVER-TRUCK are power boosters, solar and windmill systems for power and robotic arms.

The six winners were Edgar Alvarez, Libby Gonzales, Javier Gutierrez, Erik Jacome, Jake Roberson and Kael Simons. Representatives from Granite Rock awarded the winners their prize money this past Thursday at Aromas School.

The contest was sponsored by Graniterock and the California Trucking Association. The contest took place in Sacramento earlier this year, said Jim West, a representative from Graniterock.

Third-grader heads to space camp

Shawn Ross, a third-grader at the Accelerated Achievement Academy at Calaveras School, was among five winners who received a grant from the California Foundation for Gifted Education.

With the grant, Shawn will attend the Endeavour Space Camp this summer, according to a press release. Fifty proposals and requests for the grant were received. The grant was for $325.

Shawn’s commitment to the purpose of the camp and his obvious passion for the study of space travel impressed the judges, according to the press release. While at the Endeavour Space Camp, he will be studying the planet Earth, astronomy, plants, atmosphere, manned flights and other topics related to space flight.

One of Shawn’s letters of recommendation were from John D. Glass, an engineer at NASA. Glass noted Shawn’s unwavering enthusiasm and his burning desire to be an astronaut, according to the press release.

Christine White, principal at Accelerated Achievement Academy, noted Shawn’s interest in science and his extremely intuitive mind, according to the press release.

The California Foundation for Gifted Education was started two years ago by the California Association for the Gifted. The foundation awards grants to students, grants to adults who work with gifted young people and $1,000 college scholarships to high school seniors.
