A Hollister man was killed in a head-on car collision at the intersection of Fairview and Comstock Roads last week.

Jesus Medina, 61, sustained fatal injuries on July 1 just before noon when his Toyota sedan was struck by a truck after it crossed over into his lane.

The driver of the truck was arrested on scene for driving under the influence and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

According to a California Highway Patrol collision report, the CHP Monterey Communications Center started receiving calls of a two-vehicle, head-on collision on Fairview Road north of Acquistapace Place on July 1 around 11:42 a.m.

First responders determined Medina, the driver of a 2011 Toyota Camry, sustained fatal injuries due to the head-on collision. The driver, 32, of a 2017 GMC Sierra 2500HD refused medical treatment on scene, but was later transported to Hazel Hawkins Hospital for a broken right foot, the report said. A 37-year-old passenger of the GMC Sierra was taken to Natividad Medical Center and treated for minor injuries, which the report identified as abdominal and shoulder pain.

A preliminary investigation revealed the driver of the 2017 GMC Sierra passed traffic the wrong way over double yellow lines at around 60 to 70 mph. This caused a head-on collision with the 2011 Toyota Camry, which was travelling at the legal speed in the southbound lane.

The driver of the GMC Sierra was booked into San Benito County Jail for the listed charges after he was cleared by hospital staff.
