A former firefighter, who was killed in an bulldozer rollover accident in 2007, was honored Saturday as a portion of Highway 156 in San Benito County between the Alameda and Highway 25 was dedicated to the former Hollister resident.
Matt Will passed away Oct. 9, 2007 after the bulldozer he was maneuvering rolled down a Palo Colorado hill. Will was trying to free another bulldozer that was unable to move before his bulldozer slipped down the hill.
In memoriam, two signs were placed on the highway. One was placed eastbound on Highway 156 near the Alameda in San Juan Bautista, and the other was placed westbound near the Highway 25 intersection.
The signs were installed Monday, according to a Calfire press release.
The dedication opened up the third annual Matt Will Memorial Golf Tournament that was installed in his honor after his passing. Both events were held at Ridgemark Golf and Country Club.
At the time of his passing, his wife, Diana Will, a 10-year-old son and an 8-year-old daughter, survived Will. It was the first bulldozer-related death in nearly 50 years for CalFire.
