Multiple roadside fires started around 2 p.m. Monday along the road. Firefighters with Calfire, Hollister and San Benito County controlled the blazes – on about 17 acres – by around 3 p.m., according to Calfire.

One building was damaged, a barn, which had been involved before engines arrived on scene.

A total of 54 firefighters were at the incident. Calfire noted how crews worked aggressively to protect other structures and that property owners, fortunately, had “good defensible space around the residential structures,” according to the statement.

There were five Calfire engines, two San Benito County fire engines, two City of Hollister fire engines and one San Benito County water tender. Calfire also responded with an air-tactical observation plane (air attack), two air tankers, a helicopter, a dozer, one hand crew, a chief officer/incident commander, a fire investigator and a public information officer.

Calfire also reminded the public that defensible space can help save property and lives. Maintaining 100 feet of clearance around your structure allows firefighters to defend your property in the event of a wildfire.
