Hollister – Construction of the Highway 152-156 flyover is still proceeding on time, said Valley Transportation Authority spokesman Ethan Winston.
When completed, the $34 million flyover will ease congestion on Highway 152 by lifting eastbound traffic over the connector with 156, according to a VTA statement. Construction isn’t scheduled to finish until spring 2009, but Winston said the flyover itself should be open in summer 2008.
“(The project) was designed so that aspect would be finished as early as possible,” Winston said.
Most of the work so far has involved clearing the area around the highway and widening the road, he said. There won’t be any new lanes, but adding to the shoulders makes room to shift the lanes. Workers have also torn down the abandoned Don Pacheco Inn.
Work will stop for Labor Day weekend, Winston said. VTA specifically instructed the contractors not to do any work during holiday weekends because the highway carries the most traffic during that time.
When construction resumes next week, it will continue night and day.
Winston also warned that the highway is now lined by concrete K-rails and the lanes are narrower, so the speed limit has been lowered to 40 mph.
