Using a punishing ground game, and the occasional big play, the Balers imposed their will on Alisal on Friday at Andy Hardin Field.

Sophomores Zak Hicks and quarterback Josh George, who was starting in place of the injured Michael Bocksnick, each rush for more than 100 yards in the Balers’ 21-7 win. The victory evens up the Balers record at 2-2-1 and pushes them to 1-0 in the Tri-County Athletic League.

And for the first time this year, head coach Chris Cameron believed his team played a full four quarters of football – but in the first few moments of the second half it didn’t appear that was going to be the case.

Up 14-0, the Balers started the second half with the ball. On a third down and 10-yard pass, the Balers coughed up the ball to an Alisal defender.

Alisal’s Joseph Gutierrez scooped up the ball and raced into the end zone for a 25-yard fumble recovery. All of a sudden the score was 14-7.

On the next drive, George and the Balers couldn’t move the ball and were forced to punt. All of a sudden things looked bleak.

“It could have started to go the other way right there,” Cameron said. “But it didn’t. The kids fought through it.”

Thanks to a big play by Damon Perez, who sacked the quarterback on fourth down, the Balers defense came up big. And that play was really all the Balers needed.

The defense never allowed a point during the contest and no Alisal runner rushed for over 100 yards. Alisal used nine ball carries to rush for only 159 yards. They only had 24 yards through the air.

The Balers used eight backs on the ground to pound the Spartan defense. Hicks led the way with 173 yards on the ground on 14 carries, including two touchdowns. George contributed 100 yards on the ground on six carries with one touchdown.
