Almost a year later, the 20-7loss to Salinas at Andy Hardin Field last year is still something that makes the Baler coaches sick.

“They pummeled us last year,” coach Chris Cameron said.

This year the Balers hope to enact a little revenge – and they’ll have to do it without starting quarterback Michael Bocksnick, who won’t play for the second week in a row because of an injured foot.

Starting in his place will be Josh George, who ran for more than 100 yards in his first varsity start last week against Alisal. This week though the Balers will open up the playbook a little more for the sophomore quarterback.

“We are giving him a little more to do this week – it’s not going to be everything,” Cameron said. “We are going to see what he can and can’t do.”

But to win, Cameron will rely on the front seven of his defense and his offensive line.

Last week the Balers rushed for more than 300 yards in a 21-7 win, and they will need more of the same to pull off a second league win.

“They are a good, tough, physical team,” he said. “We need to be ready for a hard fought football game.”

Salinas, with a big bruising offensive line, will run a lot during Friday’s contest and the defensive line and linebackers need to be ready, Cameron said.

“We are a little small and they are big,” he said.

Gone from last year is Salinas’ Josh Estassi, who ran for 106 yards in the Cowboys win last year. In his place will be senior Raymond Cerda who rushed for 101 yards in last year’s win. This year, Cerda has rushed for 630 yards on only 97 carries. The running back has scored six touchdowns in five games.

The 2-3 Salinas Cowboys host the 2-2-1 Balers on Friday in Salinas. Kickoff is scheduled at 7:30 p.m.
