The Central Coast Barnstormers’ semi-pro football team picked up its second straight victory to open the 2011 season last Saturday, shutting down the Willows Wranglers 37-0 in Willows.

The Barnstormers, without a full squad due to the complexities of travel arrangements and work coverage, recovered from a subpar opening quarter to seize control of the game, head coach Chris Vasseur said.

Lance Goularte’s two interceptions highlighted a stifling defensive performance. Goularte already has four picks this season.

The Barnstormers pressured the Wranglers’ signal-caller early and often, notching five sacks. Korey Gray led the charge to the quarterback with one sack and plenty of quarterback pressures and knockdowns.

Offensively, the Barnstormers were again paced by a strong running game that featured multiple runners.

El Rey Henry and Jerid Feranti both scored touchdowns on the ground, rushing for 90 yards on 13 carries and 106 yards on 15 carries, respectively.

The Barnstormers’ offensive line, hampered by injuries last week, was a strength this week, particularly in the second half, opening large running lanes for their backs to run through.

Quarterback Will Kilday had an efficient outing, going 13 of 16 for 185 yards and three touchdowns, including a 47-yard scoring strike to Ted Mason, who paced all receivers with 104 yards on six catches.

The Barnstormers get into the meat of their schedule starting Saturday at home against the Contra Costa Razorbacks. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Gilroy High School.
