The first ever high school football game at Anzar High Barragan Field didn’t turn out well for the first-year Hawks, as Trinity Christian beat the school through the air in a 42-0 rout in front of a sold-out Anzar crowd.

But unlike most football games, hardly anyone cared what the score was – just that their Hawks finally had a football team.

Every big hit, big run or first down the crowd cheered the Anzar team wildly – but it just wasn’t enough to carry the eight-man football team in its first game.

And Anzar really never had a chance against the more experienced Trinity Christian Warriors.

The Warriors gashed the Anzar secondary for 246 yards and five touchdowns through the air – including a 71-yard pass play to end the third quarter and a 67-yard play in the second quarter.

The Hawks did do well on the ground, thanks to the tough and physical play of its offensive line and running backs Jesse Jimenez and Sam Jimenez.

Jesse Jimenez rushed for 93 yards on 24 carries. The small back, Sam Jimenez, who also played quarterback at times, rushed for 11 yards on 7 carries.

The two backs accounted for all seven of the team’s first downs.

Jesse Jimenez used his superior size to bowl his way over the Warriors to pick up first downs.

The Hawks struggled early with snaps – turning the ball over once in the first half because of poor exchange to the quarterback.

Despite the loss, the team expects to get better each week.

“We are taking small steps,” coach Luis Espinoza said. “We are taking them slow, but we are moving forward. Next week we are going to set a goal of coming out here and getting that first touchdown. ”
